OFFNIC's Lead Barista Charles Wong snatches First Ever Win at MOBC 2026.

OFFNIC Coffee is proud to celebrate a major milestone for our team. Our Lead Barista, Charles Wong, was named second runner-up at the Malaysia Open Barista Championship 2026, marking a strong debut for both Charles and OFFNIC as a young Malaysian specialty coffee brand. 

Held from 7 to 9 May 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the Malaysia Open Barista Championship is part of the Malaysia Open Coffee Championship 2026, also known as MOCC 2026. The competition is organised by Barista Guild Asia and brings together baristas from across the country to showcase their skills in espresso, milk-based beverages, service, creativity, and coffee storytelling. 

For Charles, this achievement carries special meaning. It was his first-ever professional barista competition. He entered as an underdog, competing alongside more experienced baristas in Malaysia’s coffee industry. After making it through the qualifying round on 7 May, Charles went on to secure a podium finish as second runner-up. 

For OFFNIC, this moment is more than a competition result. It reflects the quiet discipline, care, and consistency that Charles brings to the bar every day. 

A First Competition and a Podium Finish 

Charles’ journey into coffee did not begin with a grand plan. 

“I didn’t have any particular plan,” he recalls. “I just thought getting the diploma wouldn’t hurt.” 

What followed was a path shaped by experience. Before becoming Lead Barista at OFFNIC Coffee, Charles worked across different café environments, startups, and customer service roles. Each role gave him a deeper understanding of coffee, service, and people. 

That perspective continues to guide the way he works today. 

“A lot of people focus on making the perfect cup,” Charles says. “But in the end, the most important thing is whether the person drinking it enjoys it.” 

Behind that simple belief is a strong respect for craft. Every cup depends on details that shift from day to day. Water temperature. Pressure. Grind size. The condition of the coffee puck. The way the extraction flows. 

Charles approaches these details with patience and discipline. 

“To be a great barista, you need to manage all of these details while continuing to learn,” he says. “I am still working towards that.” 

Representing OFFNIC Coffee on an Open Stage 

At the Malaysia Open Barista Championship 2026, Charles brought that same mindset to the competition stage. 

The routine was practised repeatedly. Every movement had to feel natural. Every detail had to be intentional. For Charles, the competition was not only about performing. It was also a chance to reflect on how far he had come. 

“It is like a report card. A year-end exam,” he shared before the competition. 

Securing second runner-up in his first competitionis a proud achievement. It is also a meaningful step forward for OFFNIC Coffee as a new name in Malaysia’s specialty coffee scene. 

“Charles represents the kind of barista culture we want to build at OFFNIC. Thoughtful, curious, and grounded in the customer experience,” said the OFFNIC team. “His journey to MOBC is not only about competition. It is about showing what a young Malaysian café brand can stand for when craft is recognised, supported, and given space to grow.”

Competitions like MOBC play an important role in strengthening Malaysia’s specialty coffee community. They give baristas the space to learn, challenge themselves, meet others in the industry, and grow beyond their daily routines. 

For Charles, the experience is only the beginning. 

“I want to help more people in Malaysia recognise specialty coffee,” he says.
